Black Carpet Runner
per runner, per day
A black runner, 6ft wide and 20ft long. It does the same job as the red one and says something completely different: red is ceremony, black is design. Product launches, fashion and automotive events, gallery openings and anything with a dark brand palette all default to it.
Why black is often the better choice
Black holds a room together instead of competing with it. Against a white showroom floor it draws the eye down the walk; against a bright retail interior it separates the event from the shop it is happening in. It is also considerably more forgiving about marks than white or pink, which matters on a pavement.
Where it does not work is in low light. A black runner in a dim venue disappears, and guests will simply not see the route you built. If the space is dark, use red or add light along the edge.
Twenty feet is a long walk
Six by twenty is a full arrival, not a threshold. Plan posts along both sides — one every 5ft with rope, so ten posts and eight ropes for the full length — or the edges lift and the line wanders. Silver posts are the usual pairing; gold against black reads as a mismatch unless the rest of the room is gold too.
Practicalities
It arrives rolled and is laid by two people in a couple of minutes. Give it a straight run if you can: a carpet that has to bend around a corner looks folded rather than laid, and there is no cutting or trimming — it goes back out to the next event as it came.
Black under a step-and-repeat
The backdrop decides more than the carpet does. Under a white or brand-coloured board, black gives the photograph a clean base and nothing that argues with the logos. Under a dark board it merges: the frame becomes one dark rectangle with people standing in the middle of it, and the walk stops reading as a walk. If the board is dark, the runner is where the contrast has to come from.
The floor underneath
Hard floors are what it is for. On polished stone or a sprung floor the runner takes the traffic instead of the surface, which is often the argument that gets it approved by a venue that would rather nothing was laid at all. On existing carpet it will sit happily enough, but the edge is softer and the two pile directions catch the light differently — worth a look before the photographs rather than after.
