Black Belt Stanchions

A weighted black post with a retractable 8ft belt in the top. Pull the belt from one post, clip it to the next, and you have eight feet of managed line that took four seconds to build and can be moved without unthreading anything.

This is the most-rented item we carry, and for good reason: registration desks, badge pickup, coat checks, box offices, food lines and every switchback queue in between are all the same problem, and this is the tool for it.

Belt or rope

Belt covers 8ft per post against rope's 5ft, so the same 40ft line is six belt posts or nine rope posts. On any queue longer than a doorway that difference decides the order.

The trade is how it looks. Belt reads as functional — line up here, wait your turn — which is right for a conference and wrong for a gala entrance. Most events order both: belt where people queue, rope where people are received.

Building a switchback

A switchback is just parallel runs joined at the ends. Two runs of 24ft with a turn at each end is seven posts and holds a queue three times longer than the floor it occupies. Leave at least three feet between the runs or people cannot turn with a bag.

Belts retract under tension, so a post that gets knocked will pull its neighbour rather than fall quietly. On a busy line, put the run against a wall where you can and keep the free end anchored by a post that nobody has to walk past.

Outdoors

They work on flat, hard ground and they are fine on a pavement. What they do not do is stand alone in wind with nobody in the line — a long unattended run on an exposed forecourt will lean. For an outdoor perimeter, barricades are the right equipment and belt posts are the wrong one.
